Great adventure, well scanned and delivered. Note that this adventure is combat-light unless your players are feeling particularly feisty around guards. Best parts include 5 pre-built characters for your players. If nothing else, it gives an idea of what skills may prove useful as you prepare to GM. Also, this is a beginner's adventure; not so much because it has simple solutions, but simply due to the challenge ratings the players are expected to reach. It would be a simple matter of scaling up the numbers should your players' characters be too advanced. It's also very, very thorough. Many eventualities are covered, so that no matter what the players decide to do, the GM's never completely in the dark. While the story is about the Ten Thunders employing the players, this could be changed with relative ease if your campaign has/will have no ties to them.

A really nice set of rules, it is so much more strategy than simple die roll combat. Malifaux may turn out to be my all time favorite minature game. The addition of story driven characters just makes it   more fun nand the dark environment adds a lot to the feeling of this game.

I had no interest in Mailfaux but thought, hey the rules are free. Good intro to the game and quite playable. I highly recommend this book!

I am not sure what the previous reviewer is talking about. This book works perfectly well. It is readable, and while the layers of pictures and text can cause the pdf to take a bit to load it is definitely worth purchasing as it is cheaper than the hardcopy book and all of the malifaux books can easily be loaded onto an e-reader so that one can grab that rather than lugging a library around in a book bag.

I've been having the exact same problems the previous reviewer had. I can't read it on one computer and can't read it on my ipad. Occasionally it becomes bearably working but not often. I can't keep using this version for Malifaux, eventually I'll have to get the physical copy to keep my sanity.

Malifaux is a great system, and the second edition, for the most part, improved on that. It's awesome to see Wyrd release the core 2E rules for free so people can try them out. There's also an officially supported module for the Vassal engine, so between that and these rules, you only need to get the stat cards of the models you want in order to try the game out online at no cost. Be warned though, the gameplay is good and the models wonderful, so despite being free to try, this game may end up dangerous for your wallet.

Great adventure for the TTB roleplay! We've organized it in our store and everyone who participated has been really happy after it!

Summary first! This game is a very nice alternative to dice based RPGs. It gives the game a fresh spin with some lovely mechanics which keeps the game fast paced and great fun. I would recommend it to anyone who has an experienced game master to lead the group.

The "tests" are all done by flips of a communal fate deck. With a target number associated with the difficulty of a task. But players have the ability to "cheat" by swapping that card for one in their hand. Each player has a cheat deck of 13 cards based on their character creation. As they develop their character these cards can change.

Characters are created in a fantastic way by dealing a tarot of cards. This generates the characters fate which they must either accept or try to cheat.
As the tarot is dealt it gives players atribute points which they need to allocate. There is always some positive and some negative, so you cant have a character who is good at everything! Which I like. Some RPGs allow the development of characters who I feel are too well rounded, this game gives a more honest feel of what people are like.

The character sheets are larger than other RPGs at 4 pages. But this also holds information on the fate of the character, cheat deck and gear options etc. For someone new to RPGs it may look a little daunting.

The book also holds some great fluff for the background of the world of malifaux to help set the scene and get you in the mindset of someone about to enter the breach.

All in all I think this is a great game with a fresh aproach to RPGing. I would recommend it. However If you plan on Game mastering (Fate mastering in this game) you will probably also need the fate masters almanac.

With so much to keep track of as the fate master I think you would need a bit of background knowledge and experience in RPGs to do it effectively. (but I will review the fate master almanac separately)

A good Up to date version of the Malifaux Rules Manual. Perfect for use on a Tablet or Smartphone while playing your games.
